Hyderabad: Students of the Centre of Excellence in Arts and Design affiliated to the Mehran University of Engineering and Technology have accused director of the centre of misconduct and malpractices and demanded that he be removed immediately.
Junaid Memon, Habibur Rehman Phulpoto, Waliullah Umrani, Hidayatullah and Abdul Salam Mirani said at a news conference here on Monday that having closed down the ceramics department for all practical purposes the director was forcing the students who had sought admission to this department to change their discipline.
They alleged that if a student raised objection to the forced change of discipline, he was declared failure. Serious irregularities were committed in admissions for 2010 and the students who had obtained less that required marks were also given admission, they alleged.
They called for an inquiry into the 2010 admissions and restoration of admissions of the students who had opted for ceramics design department.
They demanded that an inquiry should be held against the director and appealed to the government and vice-chancellor of MUET to redress their grievances.
They warned if the VC failed to do so they would organise a march to Islamabad and observe hunger strike outside the offices of HEC and federal education department.
The director of the centre Prof Dr Bhai Khan Shar rejected the students allegations and claimed that group of failed students were trying to blackmail the university.
He said that the centre had not given any admission to the ceramics design department during 2009-10 because the department was yet to be made functional.
He said that one of the students who had held press conference was hit by term-back policy because his attendance was at bottom line. Even a niece of the Sindh education minister and his own niece were not promoted to next term because of the term-back policy, he asserted.
He claimed that rules and regulations were being strictly observed. Dawn
